Games in 2012

Posted in

In order to continue James line of thinking (whilst also making the first article for 6 months).

What games are people looking forward to this year?

For me Skyrim will keep me busy until June at the earliest.

After that Mass Effect 3 will be the big one and then the new GRAW for it's multiplayer awesomeness!

Martin's picture

Mass Effect 3. Everything else can fuck itself Fuck Yea - Fuck Yea

The olympic games, had to do it.

Chris D's picture

Far Cry 3, Max Payne 3, GTA V and Mass Effect 3 (though haven't played 1 or 2 yet). All of these look potentially awesome. Oh yeah and the new Hitman looks fucking sweet too. Also is the new Brothers in Arms coming out in 2012?

Chris A's picture

Nothing much is grabbing at me at the moment. I've still got such a massive backlog to start: (Deus Ex, Shogun 2, ME 1&2, Singularity, Metro 2033, AC2, X3, Civ 5, LA Noir, Hard Reset.... whoa, I could still go on) Singularity, from what I've played looks amazing; like Bioshock and HL had a baby.

I hope they learned the lessons from Far Cry 2, what a POS; there was only so many times killing people at the same check points I could take before it got tedious.

Chris D's picture

I didn't think Far Cry 2 was a piece of shit - I got many, many hours of enjoyment from that game. It wasn't perfect and had some annoying features (e.g. respawning checkpoints), but I had a lot of fun killing the same guys in countless different ways.

From what I've read, Far Cry 3 will be taking all the criticisms of FC2 seriously.

James's picture

I think the criticisms of FC2 were valid and i put lots of hours into the game - nearly collected all the hidden gems, but it was a bit blah from the get go i found. FC3 looked really cool in the gameplay trailer i saw.

I used to play a few silent hill games and the new one looks cool, also Bioshock 3 and Diablo3.

Skyrim almost up for me, lots of rain = lvl 62 (levels go up half as fast once you hit 50) - just starting the main story quest now Tongue

I think the difference in our experiences was between using the PS3 and PC; I'm sure it would be more tolerable with quicksaving. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind respawning bad guys, but within reason; I think some sort of cleared territory method, such as in Infamous or JC2 would have made the game amazing.

Chris D's picture

I agree that enemies should only respawn after, say, a day or two. And yeah I heard the save system was crap on consoles - restricted to only safe houses. The new one looks potentially very awesome.

James's picture

ah I did not know there was a difference between the console and pc. fair enough then. (Saving sucked ass on console.)
and yes the new one looks awesome!

Add Rage to my games list , quite cool

Chris A's picture

Just saw the trailer for Syndicate today; looks quite promising.

Trailer: http://youtu.be/ewwtznVkSxA?hd=1

Chris D's picture

Yep Syndicate is on my watch list. I'm also keeping my eyes on the new Counterstrike, though I doubt it will be worth while.

James's picture

Did anyone play the old syndicate. I used to have one of them. back in the...??90's???

This new one looks good, but I think it will be gimmicky but hopefully gimmicky in a bulletstorm kinda way

Chris D's picture

Yeah played the demos may years back. Fun games by memory.

Chris A's picture

Before my time. I remember reading about them though.

Speaking of games, I just got the new humble bundle for Android. World of Goo on my phone, bitches!

Chris A's picture

Chris D's picture

I never really thought of PC as an "exclusive" platform like consoles are....but clearly it is.

Chris A's picture

It turns out that list may be a bit shit, containing some shovelware, games that wont likely exist, such as Black Mesa, games that wont exist. like Fallout and games that wont likely be exclusives, such as Diablo 3.

Martin's picture

Lolz Black Mesa Source. Yeah that'll come out.

Anyway, I'm surprised to see Prey 2 there, didn't know there would be a sequel but it should be good.

Chris D's picture

Yeah Prey 2 is supposed to be a big release. Personally I thought Prey sucked ass, but we'll see.

Chris D's picture

New video showing 5mins of gameplay footage from Far Cry 3.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2NptKVlMrk

Honestly to me it doesn't look that good - looks like a generic shooter and looks extremely easy. How much does the first 90secs look like a remake of the original though?

Martin's picture

Do not want. Looks like Far Cry: Modern Warfare. "X to interact", "A to climb", "L to takedown". Too much time spent watching the character do stuff, not enough time playing the game. Pretty much the polar opposite of Far Cry.

Also, XBox controls. Thumbs Down

Scott's picture

If anyone has a console, I would recommend renting bulletstorm, ridiculous fun for about 5 hrs, then gets repetitive. Surprisingly beautiful setting too. I am a little over Skyrim, wishing I went warrior instead of Mage but too late now Sad

James's picture

nothing is too late in skyrim - im lvl 63 lol and trying to spec everything out. gets hard.

Chris D's picture

Scott, me and Martin have been urging people to play Bulletstorm for months now - not just a console title BTW. Extremely fun old-school shooter.

Martin's picture

Bulletstorm is one of my favourite shooters. I also love the sophisticated dialog.

Chris D's picture

Yes it has quite the cerebral plot too.

James's picture

Brad and I both clocked bulletstorm ages ago. was fun.

Chris D's picture

Officially announced today. Could this be my 2012 game of the year?

http://www.simcity.com/en_US

That game looks amazing, big fan of the linked region (coop) feature

iPad version? Lol

James's picture

Its on origin.... fuckit

Martin's picture

LOL too much time on Reddit James?

James's picture

Yeah pretty much. Wake up to morning reddit check and laugh

Chris A's picture

I don't like having my digital games all over the show. It's nothing to do with Origin for me.

I'd almost rather have one of those shitty cardboard boxes taking up space. It felt liberating burning all my PC game boxes.

Chris D's picture

Shitty cardboard boxes? Sir, I demand satisfaction.

Chris A's picture

I admit it, I was baiting. But do you keep any other packaging for anything else? Cereal boxes? Cheeseburger wrappers? etc.

Chris D's picture

No but I don't keep the contents of cereal or cheeseburger packages either.

Chris A's picture

Toaster box?

Chris A's picture

Fuck, I really want a cheeseburger now.

Martin's picture

I keep router boxes. I sell about half of all routers I buy (because they're shit).

Also Mass Effect 3 comes out today.

Chris A's picture

Total Biscuit had a massive rant about that game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri0vrJ-y2zM

Martin's picture

God I'm tired of people whining about DLC.

Martin's picture

Urg the background video of that Total Buscuit vid is completely full of early-game spoilers. Avoid.

Chris D's picture

Yeah the DLC moaning has to stop. Mass Effect has day 1 DLC - yet to be named, with no detail whatsoever about content, and people are bitching that they're removing content from the game. So it's OK to release extra content months/years after a game, but if you release it too close to the game's release date it's a rip off. Regardless of the game's content or the DLC's content. Ridiculous.

But to me the worst part is the fervent language and stupidity shown by gamers - PSA gamers, games are not food, not shelter. You don't need games to live. If you think a game is overpriced or doesn't represent good value, don't buy the game. No one is forcing you to buy the game, and just because you buy a game doesn't mean you absolutely must play every piece of associated content, no matter the cost.

Disclosure: Haven't watched the video because I don't really care.

edit: Watched the first 5 mins of the video and had to turn it off because it's exactly what I thought it would be - a moaning brit (who'd have thought?) whinging that he should arbitrarily be given all content Bioware produces irrespective of cost. I wonder if he goes to a car dealer and bitches that the car he bought is "not feature-complete" (his words) because it doesn't come with the option 18" wheels that he didn't pay for.

I have no problem with studios charging for extra content, because I have the option of not buying it. I guarantee the vanilla game will be massive on release, so I hardly understand the rant. People happily pay $120 for Call of Duty games with just 5 hours of SP content.

Chris D's picture

BTW: "Cynical Brit" gee I wonder who he's trying to emulate.

Chris D's picture

So as James mentioned in the chat box Diablo 3 finally has a release date of May this year. Can't say I'm personally excited because I never really played the diablo games, but this should be a massive release. I tried to play some diablo 2 recently but the graphics are barely tolerable and it doesn't play well with modern screen resolutions.

Try Titan Quest- its basically D2 but with better graphics.

James's picture

I was talking about it with Mike (canadian) and he said he thinks it will come split like Starcraft - i hope not but still wont buy it for a long while! Blizzard is turning into the masters of the split game

Chris D's picture

I've got Titan Quest and it's OK, but I don't really get into point and click style iso-RPG's. Except Deathspank.

Chris D's picture

I had heard they were remaking Syndicate but I didn't realise it was already out and I didn't realise it was a first person shooter, which is a bit of a waste. Yahtzee reviewed it this week:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/5478-Syndicate

It got 74% on Metacritic.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/syndicate

Martin's picture

Syndicate is only $90 on Origin too.

Chris A's picture

45,000 won here, plus a little piece of my soul.

I'm done with Origin.

James's picture

So I am trying to avoid buying D3 for a while, but if I do how does this area pricing work?? Can I handle it like steam and get anderson to buy it for me? since it will be about half the price of buying it in NZ or will that not work? And while we are on it Why the fuck does it cost so much more? ($79.95AUD)?? anyone know?

Chris D's picture

You can get Anderson to buy it and gift it to you.

As for the price, that's the way it works. We and the Aussies get shafted on price because of shitty regional pricing. Same as non-digital downloads - Americans buy Xbox games off the shelf for NZD$60, we pay double that. It's just that digital regional pricing is completely fucking absurd, downloading the same bits fro the same server and paying in the same currency, but paying a different price.

James's picture

yeah thats what I thought. Sweet, cheaper, cus 89 was a bit over the top

Chris A's picture

Quote:
You can get Anderson to buy it

Martin's picture

I think he's talking about D3 which should be on Steam (I assume).

Brad's picture

D3 won't be on Steam, Blizzard has Battle.net

James's picture

but from now on it looks like its a good idea to get anderson to buy all peoples games from origin since he enjoys it soooo much!

Chris A's picture

Quote:

That may have exceeded all of your data caps.

Chris D's picture

Haha I don't think Chris will be buying us games through Origin.

Anyone up for some Borderlands 2 online campaign?

Chris A's picture

PC?

Lachlan's picture

PS3, I have a mac

Chris D's picture

HAHAHAHA no. Borderlands is one of the worst games I've played. If you're not playing with people who are EXACTLY the same level as you, it's completely impossible.

Chris D's picture

Gameplay trailer for Far Cry 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7gfGxf8hXg

Looks OK. The graphics are really flat looking for some reason. Lots of bits in that video that are clearly quick-time events.

Chris D's picture

I like the way Yahtzee describes the end of Mass Effect 3:

Quote:
Mass Effect 3 concludes not with a bang or a whimper. More like with the sound you get from releasing a balloon and watching it fart its way around the lounge.

I also like how he asks poignantly:

Quote:
Is it possible you're dissatisfied with the ending simply because it 'was' ending, fanboys?

Brad's picture

I still can't see how you got that out of that Borderlands Chris, it is completely wrong. Me and James played recently he started on lvl 24 and by the time I had got from 1 - 24 he had got to 25. That's one thing I think they've done really well

Chris D's picture

Brad, that's completely false, and I have Martin and Anderson to back me up here. We played for probably around 3 dreadful hours before I coulnd't take it any more. In this time me and Martin levelled to around 10, while Anderson is somewhere around 20. I could literally sit there firing endlessly at the weakest enemy in the game and do maybe a couple of hitpoints of damage. The enemy would shoot me ONCE and I would instantly die.

I'm not exaggerating, so you're clearly mistaken. Like I say, Martin and Anderson can verify this - the game is an absolute piece of shit if you're starting from different levels.

And that's not even to mention the UI - I've never experienced a UI as bad as this game. Every time information was shown it was a litany of meaningless crap presented in the most unhelpful way (half the time weapon information isn't even visible because it's off the screen).

The guns all look, sound and feel the same, the enemies are boring and the AI is predictable. Vehicles handle like ass, the graphics are uninspiring and the universe is largely empty.

I love a good co-op game - Borderlands is not one of those.

Brad's picture

I've put 100's of hours into that game, with wildly varying characters and partners. You are just plain wrong, I don't know what you did to think this but you are.

Chris A's picture

Quote:

I played with Mike and had a 10 level difference between characters, with me as the lower level; I managed to do okay.

Quote:

You really do get on level terms rather quickly.

I will say I found it to be much more enjoyable on the console. I found the UI makes a lot more sense with a controller.

Chris A's picture

Lachlan, I no longer have a PS3, I do however have a dust catching xbox; it has never seen my internet.

1. Get a PC
2. Sign up for Steam
3. Steams Sales
4. Profit

Chris D's picture

Anderson, you saw me and Martin playing. Unless we were doing something completely wrong, I don't know how you can dispute the stupid gameplay and how ridiculously slow we levelled. Yeah we levelled faster than you, but we started 20 levels apart and even at 10 levels apart it was unplayable because we would insta-die every time you saw an enemy.

edit: You know what, I'm willing to prove the point. Organise a game with your level 20 characters I'll join with my level 10 and show you how fucking stupid this game is. I can literally sit in front of an enemy emptying all of my ammo, and do less than 2% damage. It's idiotic, and you simply don't level very fast because if you're not doing damage you're not getting XP.

Chris A's picture

Chris D's picture

So then why bother playing at all? Wouldn't it be smarter to sit in a corner and let the higher level player do everything? IT's not like I can kill enemies anyway. In the last hour or so we played I don't think I killed a single enemy except by running them over. My bullets coulnd't damage them.

Chris A's picture

I can't really comment on that without having played as your character. Maybe you have a poor selection of weapons or something.

Maybe we could try you being the highest level character; I can start a fresh one. If you're still having problems after that, then that wont be the issue.

Chris D's picture

I had the highest level weapon my guy could carry, which was level 10 rifles - which was the correct weapon for my class.

The reason we can't have me as the highest level character is because you have to start from the beginning and do those ridiculously awful fetch quests (another reason the game sucks, as if I need another).

Brad's picture

Quote:
Unless we were doing something completely wrong

You were doing something wrong

Chris D's picture

Negative Brad. The game just isn't that good. And trust me, I know good games.

Chris A's picture

Says the guy who blankets all Indie games as crap.

Chris D's picture

All indie games are crap.

And I've offered to prove my point but no one has taken me up on it....

James's picture

we dont have it on PC.

I can tell you what your doing wrong though!

Lower level character is host not the way you were doing it. That way you get full xp, high lvl guy gets 1xp a kill but rocks through it.
You will have lvld up about 10 lvls in a hour at least

And the fetch quests take about 10 mins tops with 2 of you.

James's picture

And last time I heard you say trust me it was about burger patties.....fail

Chris D's picture

Mike ruined those burgers, not me.

Chris A's picture

And he killed that chicken.

Lest we forget.

Chris A's picture

Quote:

I haven't played much of it, but Bastion gets a collective hard on from Reddit.

Brad's picture

Actually I don't know why I try Chris, you don't like any good anything.

Chris D's picture

Watch Sunshine, friend.

Lachlan's picture

I really enjoyed Borderlands, my flatmates and I generally played split screen, but any time we had uneven levels we would just jump to General Knoxx and even it out in like 25 minutes.

Martin's picture

I am late to this conversation but I agree with Chris (Doms). When we played with Anderson is was shit, what he is saying is exactly how it went down. Our characters would shoot an enemy until we literally ran out of ammo and then Anderson would come and one-shot them. It wasn't fun at all.

The most enjoyable part of that game was sitting in the menu watching that little robot guy do stuff.

Chris A's picture

I don't 1 hit unless I use my trusty sniper rifle; even that is a rare feat.

James's picture

Enjoying D3 - fun to play multiplayer and it gets hard quick. Still haven't played it heaps though.

Interested in Daves idea for late night game session soon Tongue
