Who here has fitness goals for the year? I've decided on my goals this year and I'm working toward them. My stuff is army-related because I'm wanting to get a lot more involved with the army stuff over the next couple of years.
- Get to the top of the Mount in under 25 minutes with my pack (weighing no less than 27.5kg)
- Run to the top of the mount with webbing on (weighing no less than 15kg)
- Run 2.4km in under 10 minutes
- Run two half-marathons
- 100 push-ups non stop
Anyone else wanna share?
Hmm looking at my goals in writing makes them seem rather lofty - oh well, I've got 10 months I guess
- Multiple Half Marathons. Time: Less than 1.5 hours.
- Two Marathons. Time: Less than 4 hours.
- Ocean Swim Series: Devonport to CBD.
- Cycle Taupo: 160km solo.
- Would also like to attempt a team Adventure Race. 8hr+ race.
Damn mang, you want to do the Taupo race solo? I don't want to sound like a negative nancy, but that's a tall order - my boss is an avid cyclist and he struggles around this course solo. You might be better joining a team this year and trying solo next year IMO.
Other than that, _b
Hmmm, Dads not that fit - but I am pretty sure he has done this
I'll have to put some thought into it. I'm joining a gym next week with the goal of bulking but I don't have any firm goals and I don't even know what a reasonable goal is. Basically I know dick all about fitness/exercise. Maybe Michelle should chime in about it. I definitely want to be able to run 5km soon, I think I can accomplish this in 2 months.
If you want to improve your running you should be running/jogging 3-4 times per week and one of those runs should be the distance you want to achieve...so map out a 5km track and run/jog as much of it as you can...alternating with walking when you need to rest. Bulking up is a bit more difficult but for the Doms body type the best way to start with is to do a standard all over body weight programme and just make sure you're eating enough so you don't burn off all the muscle you've just made
Hmmm goals for fitness :
1. Run a couple of marathons
2. Gain about 5 kilos
3. 80 km road bike
4. Would love to run Tongariro sub 3 hours
Just another note - if any of you are interested fivefinger shoes
http://www.barefootinc.co.nz/
Is a new site selling em in NZ
These are the most retarded of all internet fads. I'm not going to wear these things just because Google's CEO does TBH.
Hmmm, have you run barefoot before?
Instead of dismissing something out of hand because you see it as a fad on the internet, why not do some research, and make your own, more informed decision as to why human evolution may of designed a better platform to run on than Phil Knight....
You're not really bare foot if you're running in these, are you? As far as I'm concerned these ridiculous things offer the worst of both worlds, and are a retarded internet fad.
BTW, the barefoot running thing is still extremely fringe, and there's little reason to jump on the bandwagon until some much more extensive research has taken place. You don't see any professional sprinters, marathoners or ultra-marathoners running barefoot do you? It's a typically arrogant thing to dismiss the expertise of thousands of runners and doctors based on some fringe research written in a couple of books.
Hmmm I know a pretty fit physiotherapist who found the Taupo race pretty difficult....his Dad, who is an iron man, wooped him hahaha
damn just looked up that site...those shoes are uuuuugly
human evolution may have designed a better platform but for the most part humans have gone and ruined that platform before they hit their 20s
stupid 6inch heels worn by 14 year old girls for instance.
yes well that doesn't help...but even basic early development gets overlooked by many parents when it comes to physical activity
If I ever have a child (heaven forbid) I will have him/her/it running marathons before its first birthday.
Chris; Are you aware of mapmyrun.com. Really handy website for measuring and logging training runs.
Hows training going for you and Jill?
Bought your tickets yet?
I don't need mapmyrun because I record everything on my GPS.
Haven't bought tickets yet - should do that this week.
Dave, I have been using mapmyrun.com its awesome,I just be came a member.
Training is going well, I have a training plan that I have been following. Ran 13k on Sunday.
Will buy tickets this week.
Are you paying for premium or just using advert-riddled standard?
mapmyrun.com > chris's GPS
GPS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> manually mapping a run.
I don't understand what Map My Run has that google maps doesn't offer? Then I haven't used it so meh.
Ability to track the runs you do.
Log times in order to see improvement.
Share runs with other people.
Search for cool runs other people have logged using key words.
All sounds kind of simple, yet really quite useful.
Just using the standard membership. The ads piss me off but I still would rather that than paying for a premium membership.
My GPS does all these also. It also adds the ability to have real-time comparisons to previous runs (eg "750 meters ahead" etc), and tons of other real time data. Remember that Map My Run is powered by Google Maps, just like my GPS software.
Do you find it annoying to carry your HUGE phone around with you?
To be fair, I'd say the iPod I'd run with is bigger than his phone.
My phone isn't that big at all, and it doubles as my MP3 player. It fits comfortably in my pocket (if I'm wearing shorts with a pocket) or on my armband.
Its alright, just stirring!
I'll give you something to stir.
Hows the running going guys?
Im currently trying to get my 10km time under 40mins. This heat is killing me.
Tickets yet?
Hhmm I'm improving but still very new at this running thing. I keep an iPod Touch on me while running and it's a bit bulky but you forget about it after a couple of minutes. Would be about the size of Chris' phone.
I haven't been doing that much running TBH but Jill has. We bought our Xterra tickets last night.
I bought my ticket last night as well.
Also just realised that the Rotorua Marathon is only 9 odd weeks away.....eek
Hrmmm...
Do it.......
Chris/Jill: Just thought about this. Might pay to get a few hills into your training runs as the Xterra course has many hills including quite a big one at the 16km mark.
Less than 40 sleeps now.
Thanks for the tip Dave. I have been doing some training with hills but will do more so I am prepared.
I ran up the Mount yesterday :o
But still not really that fit yet. I really should get on with it. Meh.
5 weeks to go approx..... hurry hurry
Ugh I'm in trouble. Not running tonight either. Hrmmm.
Walk briskly whilst golfing on Friday
I'll make Darryl run between each hole. Or he can just play normally and I'll run catching up to him.
Dave, how you feeling for the run next week?
Good, My target time for the half marathon this year is sub 1.30. Should get to sub 1.40 for Xterra due to the hilly nature of the course. Haven't had the greatest build up but still feeling pretty good.
Interested to see how you pull up after a weekend of drinking in Chch though?
My big call is whether I enter the Rotorua Marathon on 1st May........
Yeah I'm fkd TBH - I just haven't been doing much running over the last few weeks. Oh well.
