Leaving my job...

Hey Guys,

As some of you may know, I have recently handed in my notice.....my question, what should i do?

Who here has an awesome job, if so whats the industry?

I kinda have a blank slate. I want to start my own thing, and I will...but I need to learn some more skills....You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, etc., so am evaluating some part time positions in Auckland/Singapore.

Any huge problems in your industry, business or job, (problem == opportunity) that would be worth trying to solve?

Any comments or recommendations....open to it all,

Thanks

Wow, shitty market to be leaving a job - didn't liek what you were doing? What were you doing exactly?

As far as future career paths - accountancy isn't exactly the most exciting career in the world. If I don't stay with accounting in the long run I would look at investment/finance - I would love to be a financial analyst/advisor, which would also help satisfy my appetite for sales and person/person contact. But it depends whether you're interested in a numbers-heavy job with a focus on business - that's my area of "expertise" (I use that term loosely).

edit: Oh I just thought of something that might interest you - a NZ company called Xero is grabbing the accounting software market by the balls and shaking it into something new and decent. The accounting software market has been dominated by MYOB in recent years, which has lead to a stagnation in innovation. As a result we're running and recommend software that feels like it was designed in 1990 (because it was). Xero is transforming the market and has a huge advantage on its competition - both in terms of its software and its business model. If I were in the job market, I would look seriously at soliciting them - they often have lots of exciting sounding jobs available (check their website) and would be a very exciting and progressive company to work for - plus you get in early, and get the perks of being an original member of the team. They now have operations in NZ, Aus and UK, plus perhaps others.

I was doing web design/development and web marketing for a firm out in Katikati - and it actually wasnt to bad, kinda got to do whatever I thought best in managing and growing a US$1.4million/year ecommerce site.
But f*ck working for others blow, especially when you get to see their profit margins - factory gate cost NZ$4 --> sell for US$199 anyone?
Considered doing my CFA - but again could take awhile, Rod Drury and his little Silicon Welly ecosystem with xero and etc could be interesting except its in wellington (they actually just signed a deal with yodlee the shit that powered mint.com --> which means they will be entering the US market in the not so distant future....)

And I am moving to Auckland for a couple of months to see what happens, I am going to get some contract/consulting work and work on starting a business, just not exactly sure what in, so once again, any suggestions. Industry in need of disrupting anyone?
